Dulux AcraTex Roof Coatings: What Makes Them Different
Not all roof coatings are equal and the membrane system matters as much as the colour. This is a look at what a premium coating system brings to a restoration and why the product on top of good preparation is worth getting right.

There are a lot of roof coatings on the market and most homeowners have no way to compare them. The differences are real and they are mostly in areas you cannot see.
Here is what the AcraTex system involves and why accreditation changes what you end up holding at the end.
A system rather than a tin
AcraTex roof restoration is specified as a sequence: surface preparation, a sealer or primer suited to the substrate, then a high build membrane applied in multiple coats to a stated film thickness.
Each component is designed to work with the others. Substituting a cheaper primer under a quality membrane breaks the chain and the failure that follows is generally blamed on the coating.
That is why the specification matters more than the brand on the drum.
What high build means in practice
A high build acrylic membrane is thick, flexible and applied at a much heavier rate than conventional paint.
That thickness lets it bridge hairline surface crazing in aged tile rather than sinking into it and gives it the body to stay flexible through Perth's daily thermal cycling.
It also means coverage rates are lower and material costs higher than thin coatings. A quote that is dramatically cheaper is frequently cheaper because less product is going on.
Why accreditation is not just a sticker
Dulux extends its product warranty on AcraTex roofing through applicators on its registered network. The same product applied by an unaccredited operator does not carry that warranty.
Accreditation involves the applicator being known to the manufacturer and applying to specification. It is a quality control mechanism rather than a marketing badge.
Powerdrive is accredited, which means you finish the job holding a manufacturer warranty in addition to our own ten year workmanship warranty. Two documents covering two different kinds of failure.
Colour and heat
The roofing colour range is extensive and worth looking at physically rather than on a screen.
Lighter colours reflect more solar radiation and reduce heat load into the roof space, which is a genuine consideration on a west facing Perth roof in February. Darker colours conceal organic staining better under heavy tree cover.
Neither is right in the abstract. It depends on your house, your aspect and what your street looks like.
What the warranty does not cover
Worth reading properly rather than filing. Product warranties assume the system was applied to specification and that reasonable maintenance follows.
Blocked Gutter Replacement Perth causing water to sit against a roof are not a coating defect. Neither is damage from somebody walking the roof carelessly, nor organic growth allowed to establish over years without attention.
The exclusions are reasonable and knowing them tells you what looking after the roof actually requires.
How to check what you are being quoted
Ask for the product name and the number of coats in writing. Ask whether the applicator is accredited and whether the manufacturer warranty will be issued.
Ask what primer or sealer is specified for your substrate, because that answer distinguishes people who follow a system from people who own a spray unit.
None of those questions are aggressive. Any competent operator answers them without hesitating.
Where it suits and where it does not
It suits sound concrete tile that has lost its surface, which describes an enormous share of Perth housing built between the fifties and the nineties.
It suits metal roofing with the appropriate metal system rather than the tile membrane.
It does not suit roofs with structural problems underneath, asbestos cement sheeting, or original terracotta that is better cleaned and repaired than coated.
Common questions
Is AcraTex the only good option? No. It is a system we know, apply under accreditation and can warrant. Other quality systems exist. The failure modes almost always trace to preparation rather than brand.
Can I supply the product myself? That generally voids the accreditation pathway and the warranty with it.
How many coats? The specification governs it and it should be stated on your quote rather than decided on the day.

Where the colour range helps
The roofing range is designed for roofs rather than adapted from a wall palette, which matters because roof colours read differently at scale and at distance.
Take the fandeck home. Look at it against your brickwork in morning light and again at four in the afternoon. Roof colour is one of very few decisions in a house that everybody in the street sees and you rarely do.
Terracotta tones suit character homes through the older suburbs. Charcoals and greys sit comfortably on mid century and modern housing. Neither rule is absolute.
Heat, reflectance and roof spaces
Roof colour affects how much solar heat enters the roof space, which affects how hard air conditioning works through a Perth February.
Lighter colours reflect more. On a large west facing roof with poor ventilation, that is a genuine comfort difference rather than a marketing claim.
It interacts with ventilation and insulation rather than replacing them. A pale roof over an unventilated roof space is still an unventilated roof space.
What accreditation asks of the applicator
Applying to specification. Correct primer, correct number of coats, correct film build, correct conditions.
It also means the manufacturer knows who is applying their product, which is the point. A warranty is a promise about future performance and no manufacturer extends one blindly.
For you it means the paperwork at the end is worth something. An unaccredited application of the same product leaves you holding a workmanship warranty and nothing else.
Questions worth asking any coating contractor
Which primer or sealer for my substrate and why that one.
How many coats and what film build.
How long between treatment and cleaning.
Are you accredited and will a manufacturer warranty be issued in my name.
What happens if the weather turns during the job.
Five questions. Any competent operator answers all five without pausing.
What you should end up holding
A manufacturer product warranty issued in your name. A written workmanship warranty from the applicator. The product name, the colour code and the number of coats applied.
Photographs of the repairs now hidden beneath the finish, which matter enormously at sale time when a building inspector asks what was done.
If a job finishes and you are handed nothing except an invoice, something in the process was skipped.
Powerdrive applies AcraTex under accreditation across the metro, from Kwinana and Baldivis in the south through to Ballajura, Beechboro and Caversham in the north east. Membrane describes the flexible topcoat carrying colour and weather resistance. Film build describes thickness once dry, measured in microns. Coverage rate describes how far a litre stretches, which is inversely related to build.
Somebody quoting a suspiciously low figure is usually promising a generous coverage rate, whether they phrase it that way or not. Thin film, cheap job, short life. The arithmetic is unforgiving.
Two related products confuse people and are worth separating. Roof membranes are what this article describes. Sealers marketed for terracotta are something else entirely, being penetrating rather than film forming and intended to reduce porosity without altering appearance. They suit unglazed heritage tiles where a coloured membrane would be inappropriate.
Asking for the wrong one wastes money and occasionally damages a valuable roof permanently. Describe your tile honestly when enquiring. Terracotta, concrete, glazed, unglazed, previously coated or original. Those five words determine the whole recommendation.

Specification and sourcing
Two documents should exist at the end of a coating job. The manufacturer warranty on the Dulux AcraTex roof restoration system, which is only available through accredited applicators, and a written workmanship warranty from whoever did the work. They cover different failures. Tile matching, where it is needed, comes from Bristile Roofing or salvage stock at Roof Top Industries.
