Unlike the flatter beach suburbs to the south, Hillarys keeps large sand dunes and remnant vegetation, the beach is famously hard to reach because of them. Elevated dune sites bring sand movement, retaining walls and down-slope drainage into the inspection. And it is a coastal, reef-fronted suburb (Marmion Marine Park lies offshore), so the sea air works on everything metal.
